Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his gratitude to several world leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, for their continued attention to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

During a press briefing Thursday, Putin acknowledged the efforts of these leaders and others for their commitment to seeking peace in the war-torn region, despite the many global challenges they face.

“I would like to start by offering my sincere thanks to President Trump of the US for his focus on the Ukraine situation. Many state leaders, including President Xi Jinping of China, Prime Minister Modi of India, and the Presidents of Brazil and South Africa, have been dedicating significant time to this issue. We appreciate their contributions, as it is all for the noble cause of stopping the conflict and preventing further loss of life,” Putin stated.

Prime Minister Modi has been stressing and reiterating about bringing peace to the region, thereby clearly setting India’s stance on the Russia- Ukraine conflict. During his recent meeting with Trump at the White House, PM Modi made it clear that India was not neutral in the matter, emphasising that India sides with peace.

“This is not an era of war but of dialogue and diplomacy,” PM Modi had said, underscoring India’s commitment to diplomatic efforts. PM Modi has also maintained open channels of communication with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, repeatedly stressing the need for peaceful resolution.

The US has proposed a 30-day ceasefire, urging Russia to accept the deal without any conditions.

Putin, while expressing support for a ceasefire, acknowledged there are “nuances” that need to be addressed, adding that he had “serious questions” about how the proposal would be implemented.

In response, US President Donald Trump referred to Putin’s comments as “promising” but also noted that the statement was “not complete”, suggesting that further discussions were necessary.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has agreed to the ceasefire proposal during talks held in Saudi Arabia earlier this week, following mounting pressure after a meeting between Trump and Zelensky in February.

The war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has caused immense devastation, with hundreds of thousands dead or injured and millions displaced. The conflict has led to severe economic and geopolitical tensions between Russia and the West, with the ceasefire discussions now offering a glimmer of hope for a resolution.

Port Louis: The government of Mauritius Tuesday announced its decision to bestow the country’s highest honour ‘The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his ongoing two-day State Visit to the Indian Ocean archipelago.

Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam made the announcement just before PM Modi began addressing the Indian community in Mauritius Tuesday evening. Prime Minister Modi is the first Indian to receive the honour.

It is also the 21st international award bestowed upon PM Modi by a country.

“It is very fitting for you, Prime Minister. Since we became a republic, only five foreign dignitaries have got that title and among them there is a person who we call the ‘Gandhi of Africa’ – Nelson Mandela who received it in 1998. Let me tell you that we are greatly honoured to have you amongst us here today and that you managed to find time out of your very, very busy schedule,” said Ramgoolam amidst huge applause.

In December, Kuwait bestowed its highest honour ‘The Order of Mubarak Al Kabeer’ to PM Modi, in appreciation of his distinguished achievements and the efforts made to strengthen the relations between the two countries.

The Order is awarded to Heads of State and foreign Sovereigns and to members of foreign royal families in sign of friendship.

It has been previously awarded to foreign leaders like Bill Clinton, Prince Charles and George Bush besides other dignitaries like Queen Elizabeth and Prince Muhammad bin Salman.

Before that, Prime Minister Modi was conferred with Guyana’s highest civilian honour, ‘The Order of Excellence’, by the country’s President Mohamed Irfaan Ali, for his visionary statesmanship, championing the rights of developing countries on the global stage, exceptional service to the global community and for his commitment to strengthePM Modining India-Guyana relations.

During the India-CARICOM Summit in Guyana, Dominica too had conferred its highest national honour, the ‘Dominica Award of Honour,’ on PM Modi in acknowledgement of his pivotal support during the Covid-19 pandemic and his commitment to fostering India-Dominica relations.

Nigeria also conferred the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Prime Minister Modi during his first official visit to the country in November.

The Indian PM was the first foreign leader to be conferred with the award since 1969 when Queen Elizabeth received Nigeria’s highest national honour.

‘The Order of Mubarak Al Kabeer’ takes the number of civilian honours received by PM Modi to a record 20, highlighting his leadership and India’s growing stature on the global stage.

Analysts reckon that it is also a reflection of India’s strengthened diplomatic relationships and the country’s expanding influence.

Before Kuwait, Guyana, Dominica and Nigeria, PM Modi had been conferred highest civilian honours in Saudi Arabia (King Abdulaziz Sash, 2016), Afghanistan (State Order of Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan, 2016), Palestine (Grand Collar of the State of Palestine Award, 2018), UAE (Order of Zayed Award, 2019), Russia (Order of St. Andrew the Apostle, 2019 – received by PM Modi in July 2024), Maldives (Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddin, 2019), Bahrain (King Hamad Order of the Renaissance, 2019), US (Legion of Merit by the US Armed Forces in 2020), Bhutan (Order of the Druk Gyalpo, 2021) Papua New Guinea (Ebakl Award, 2023), Fiji (Companion of the Order of Fiji, 2023), Papua New Guinea (Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu, 2023), Egypt (Order of Nile, 2023), France (Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, 2023), Greece (Grand Cross of the Order of Honour, 2023).

In addition to these highest civilian honours, PM Modi has received several prestigious awards from renowned global organisations.

In 2018, he was awarded the Seoul Peace Prize by the Seoul Peace Prize Cultural Foundation, in recognition of his contributions to global harmony and world peace.

In the same year, the United Nations honoured PM Modi with its highest environmental accolade, the Champions of The Earth Award, for his bold environmental leadership.

In 2019, PM Modi received the first-ever Philip Kotler Presidential Award, which is annually awarded to leaders who demonstrate outstanding national leadership.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation awarded PM Modi the Global Goalkeeper Award in 2019, in recognition of his efforts to transform India’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan into a mass movement for cleanliness.

In 2021, PM Modi received the Global Energy and Environment Leadership Award from Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA), in recognition of his leadership on global energy and environmental sustainability.

Port Louis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate over 20 India-funded projects, ranging from capacity building to community-linked infrastructure, during his two-day state visit to Mauritius, officials said.

Modi will also announce new major infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening democracy in the Southeast African island nation.

Prime Minister Modi, along with his Mauritian counterpart Navin Ramgoolam, will jointly inaugurate the Civil Services College building.

The construction of the building was completed at an approximate cost of $4.75 million. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the project was signed in 2017.

Modi will also e-inaugurate the Area Health Centre and 20 community projects, which have been constructed at a cost of around INR 7 crores. These community projects also include sports-related infrastructure.

“We have something called community development projects, and these are small projects at the grassroots level, which are implemented very fast within a short span of time. Some of these projects are also in the area of sports. We have developed football fields and other such sports facilities, which can be found all over Mauritius,” Anurag Srivastava, India’s High Commissioner to Mauritius, told PTI Videos.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway at various sites in Port Louis for the prime minister’s visit.

Speaking to PTI Videos, Bedouin Site Manager Rambojun Siddharth said, “Today, we are working to complete preparations for the inauguration of the Civil Services College. The leaders will gather at the Cubical Sphere Auditorium, next to the College. The Indian Prime Minister and our Prime Minister will hold a meeting there. We are aiming to finish everything before the 12th of March.”

He expressed gratitude to India for funding the project.

“The college is fully equipped with all the necessary facilities. Many opportunities will arise,” Rambojun said.

Adjacent to the college, the India-funded National Archives and Library building is under construction. The Project Director of Varindera Construction Limited, Baljeet Sharma, who is working on-site, said India has completed most of the projects in Mauritius on time.

“Most of the India-funded projects in Mauritius have been constructed by our company, including 956 housing projects, two area health centres, and medical clinics. We are also constructing a Renal Transplant Centre at the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital. India has been delivering projects on time,” Sharma told PTI Videos.

Ahead of his trip to Mauritius, Prime Minister Modi Monday said the visit will open a “new and bright” chapter in the ties between the two nations.

Mauritian Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful, speaking to PTI Videos, said a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a line of credit will be signed March 12.

“There will be the signing of a MoU on a line of credit, which is being granted by India, regarding the replacement of our water pipes,” Ramful said.

The strong ties between India and Mauritius are evident in the numerous India-supported development initiatives across the island.

In January 2022, both countries signed a MoU to implement 96 community development projects across Mauritius. Of these, 51 have already been inaugurated.

In 2016, India granted Mauritius $353 million as part of a Special Economic Package for five key projects, including the Metro Express Project, the Supreme Court Building, the New ENT Hospital, the Social Housing project, and digital tablets for schoolchildren.

In 2017, India also provided a $500 million Line of Credit to finance 10 additional projects, including Phase I and II of the Metro Project, the Social Housing Project, the supply of gas-based incinerators and firefighting vehicles, an 8 MW Solar Power Plant, a new Forensic Science Laboratory, the National Archives & Library, and the Mauritius Police Academy.

Port Louis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Port Louis Tuesday morning for a pivotal two-day visit to Mauritius, which aims to further strengthen the relationship between the two nations.

Upon arrival in the East African country, the Prime Minister was given a ceremonial welcome at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport by his Mauritian counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam.

Adding to the enthusiastic reception, members of the Indian diaspora gathered outside the Oberoi Hotel in Port Louis to greet the Indian Prime Minister.

PM Modi is scheduled to attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius as the Chief Guest March 12, following an invitation from Prime Minister Ramgoolam.

This visit holds special significance as it marks PM Modi’s first trip to Mauritius since 2015, when he unveiled India’s Vision SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), underlining the importance of cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

During his visit, PM Modi will meet with the President of Mauritius, Dharam Gokhool, and engage in discussions with Prime Minister Ramgoolam and other senior officials.

His itinerary also includes interactions with leaders of various political parties and members of the Indian-origin community, who play an integral role in Mauritius’ cultural and social landscape.

As part of the visit, PM Modi will inaugurate two key projects — the Civil Service College and the Area Health Centre — both constructed with grant assistance from India. These projects reflect India’s continued commitment to supporting Mauritius’ development.

The visit is expected to see the signing of several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), strengthening cooperation in areas such as maritime security, healthcare, small and medium enterprises, trade, and capacity building. The visit also aligns with India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, aimed at fostering stronger ties with regional partners.

A significant highlight of the National Day celebrations will be the participation of Indian Defence forces. An Indian Navy contingent, along with an Indian Navy ship, will take part in the event.

Additionally, an Indian Navy helicopter, the Akash Ganga Skydiving Team from the Indian Air Force, and a group of NCC cadets will showcase their skills during the celebrations.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that both countries will sign a technical agreement for sharing white-shipping information between the Indian Navy and Mauritian authorities.

This move is expected to boost Mauritius’ maritime security by improving surveillance in its trade corridors and enhancing regional cooperation for real-time data sharing.

Foreign Secretary Misri further highlighted that PM Modi and PM Ramgoolam will jointly inaugurate projects implemented with Indian support and oversee the signing of several MoUs focussed on capacity building, bilateral trade, combating cross-border financial crimes, and promoting small and medium enterprises.

High-level diplomatic engagement between India and Mauritius has remained consistent in recent years. President Murmu had graced Mauritius’ National Day celebrations in 2024 as the Chief Guest, while Mauritius has been a notable participant in PM Modi’s swearing-in ceremonies in 2014, 2019, and 2024.

Mauritius was also a special invitee at the G20 Summit in 2023 and co-launched the Global Biofuels Alliance alongside India and other nations.

The visit not only reinforces the strong historical ties between the two nations but also marks a new chapter in their strategic partnership, with fresh collaborations set to enhance development and security in the region.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a two-day visit to Mauritius, where he will be the chief guest of island nation’s 57th National Day celebrations. During the visit, India and Mauritius are also expected to ink a raft of agreements to strengthen bilateral relations.

The Indian diaspora is also excited and has started preparations to give PM Modi a grand welcome ahead of their national day celebrations.

Meanwhile, the pictures of PM Modi’s visit to the island nation, almost three decades ago, has surfaced where he participated in various programmes and also held wide-ranging interactions with the local population.

Modi Archive, a popular handle on X, shared the old pictures of PM Modi’s visit to the ‘Mini India’, recalling the deep bond of history, language and culture that the two nations share in common.

“As PM Modi revisits Mauritius, it feels like a homecoming to Mini India,” said the X handle.

Notably, Mauritius holds a ‘special connection’ with India, as a vast chunk of its population has their origins here.

According to Modi Archive, PM Modi visited Mauritius for the first time in 1998, where he addressed the International Ramayana Conference in Moka.

“Then serving as BJP National General Secretary, he spoke about Lord Ram’s universal values and how the Ramayana serves as a bridge uniting India and Mauritius in an eternal civilisational embrace,” it said.

During his first visit, PM Modi also connected with local population of Mauritius and built long-lasting friendships.

He engaged with key leaders, including then-President Cassam Uteem, Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, and Leader of the Opposition Sir Anerood Jugnauth.

He also met Paul Raymond Berenger, who later became Prime Minister of Mauritius and also understood how Mauritius’ struggle for independence mirrored India’s own fight for freedom.

The Modi Archive further says: “PM Modi’s 1998 visit was not limited to official meetings. He took the time to understand the land, its history, and its people and also visited the sacred Ganga Talao, where he witnessed how Hindu traditions continue to thrive outside India.”

Recalling this emotional connection at Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in 2015, PM Modi had said: “If there is one place that unites all of Mauritius, it is Ganga Sagar. The pond was created by the residents of Mauritius, but they brought water from the Ganga and poured it into the pond. Though the quantity of water may be small, the emotions and devotion associated with it have given it a different dimension. To the people, it is a representation of the Ganga, and even today, the Shivratri Mela is organised on its banks and brings together the entire population of Indian origin.”

When PM Modi visited the island nation in 2015, about 17 years later, he stood at Ganga Talao again and offered his respects to Maa Ganga.

According to Modi Archive, PM Modi also addressed the people of Mauritius on its national day in 2015 and said: “Brothers and sisters, to know whether a mango crop is good, one does not need to check every single fruit. Just tasting one or two is enough to understand the quality of the entire harvest. Similarly, if the world looks at Mauritius, they can see a glimpse of what India is like. What will the people of India be like? If the sample is so extraordinary, imagine the greatness of the entire nation!”

Harsil: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday emphasised the need for year-round tourism in Uttarakhand to strengthen the state’s economy, asserting that “no season should be off-season” for the region.

Addressing a large public gathering in Harsil, the Prime Minister extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the recent tragic incident in Mana.

“In this difficult time, the unity and support shown by the people of our country have provided immense strength to the affected families,” he said.

Praising Uttarakhand’s spiritual significance, he expressed gratitude for being able to visit the winter abode of Goddess Ganga. “This land of Devbhoomi is filled with spiritual energy. Visiting these sacred sites and meeting all of you fills me with great joy,” he said.

Recalling his deep connection with the state, PM Modi said, “Because of Maa Ganga’s blessings, I got the opportunity to serve Uttarakhand. I believe it was her blessings that led me to Kashi, where I now serve as a parliamentarian. I have always felt that Maa Ganga has adopted me, and today, I am honoured to visit her maternal home, Mukhwa.”

The Prime Minister also reminisced about his bond with the people of Uttarakhand, especially the women who affectionately send him local produce.

“I fondly remember my ‘didi-bhulis’ (sisters) from here. They keep sending me the famous red grams of Harsil and other local products. I am truly grateful for your love,” he added.

Reflecting on his last visit to Kedarnath, he reaffirmed his vision for the state. “I had said that this decade belongs to Uttarakhand. Though those words were mine, I believe it was Baba Kedar who empowered me to say them. And today, with his blessings, those words are becoming a reality,” he said.

PM Modi emphasised the significance of winter tourism in achieving economic empowerment for the state.

“Tourism in Uttarakhand has been seasonal, with a peak during March to June. But after that, the number of visitors drops, leading to economic challenges. It is crucial to ensure that no season is an off-season. Tourism should be active throughout the year,” he said.

Highlighting the state’s potential, he stressed that winter is the most special time to experience “Devboomi” Uttarakhand’s true essence.

“Winter tourism here offers thrilling activities like trekking and skiing, which are truly exhilarating experiences. Additionally, many pilgrimage sites hold special rituals during this season. Even in the villages, one can witness religious ceremonies deeply rooted in our ancient traditions,” he said.

“When in winter, there is fog in most parts of the nation, then in these mountains, there is bright sunlight. This can be a special event, and in Gharwali, one can say ‘Gham taapo pariyatan’ (sun-bathe tourism),” he added.

He praised the Uttarakhand government’s vision for 365-day tourism, stating that it will offer visitors diverse and enriching experiences.

“Our double-engine government is committed to making Uttarakhand a developed state. From the Char Dham All-Weather Road to modern expressways, railway expansion, air travel, and helicopter services, Uttarakhand has seen rapid development over the past decade,” he said.

The Prime Minister also mentioned the Kedarnath and Hemkund ropeway projects, which will significantly benefit the elderly, women, and children, making religious travel more accessible.

Concluding his speech, PM Modi highlighted the surge in tourism in Uttarakhand, particularly the unprecedented number of pilgrims visiting the Char Dham this year.

“This increasing influx of visitors is a testament to Uttarakhand’s growing prominence as a premier spiritual and adventure tourism destination,” he said.

Chamoli: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday spoke to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to assess the ongoing rescue efforts in Chamoli’s Mana region, where an avalanche buried a Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp, trapping 55 workers.

So far, 47 workers have been rescued, while the search for the remaining eight is continuing on a war footing. The injured have been airlifted to the Army Hospital in Joshimath for treatment.

CM Dhami expressed his gratitude to PM Modi for the Centre’s full support, stating on X, “Respected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji spoke on the phone and took information about the rescue operation being carried out to safely evacuate the workers trapped in Mana of Chamoli district.”

“He also took detailed information on the situation of rain and snowfall in the state. During this, the Prime Minister assured that the central government will provide all possible assistance to deal with any emergency,” the Chief Minister added.

Dhami reached Joshimath from Dehradun to oversee the situation and checked on the condition of the injured at the helipad before they were transported to the Army Hospital.

Rescue teams worked relentlessly Saturday, pulling out 14 more workers from under the heavy snow. With roads beyond Lam Bagad blocked due to snowfall, authorities have focussed entirely on aerial rescue operations.

Two Indian Air Force (IAF) Mi-17 helicopters were deployed for rescue missions from Joshimath Base Camp to Badrinath Dham. One helicopter is continuing its mission while the recently rescued workers are being transported to the Army Hospital.

Despite harsh weather conditions, over 150 personnel from the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are working tirelessly on the mission.

CM Dhami has been actively monitoring the situation, directing officials to airlift critically injured workers to advanced medical facilities. He stated on X, “With the weather clearing up, relief and rescue operations have been expedited. With the blessings of Lord Badri Vishal and the tireless efforts of rescue workers, all possible measures are being taken to ensure the safety of the trapped workers.”

Lieutenant Manoj Srivastava, PRO Defence, told IANS, “According to the latest information, weather conditions around Joshimath and Mana have improved today. The Indian Army has hired three civil helicopters, through which the injured are being evacuated smoothly.”

“The rescue operations are currently underway, and hopefully, the remaining eight workers will also be pulled out soon,” he added.

The avalanche buried eight containers and a hut where workers engaged in road construction were staying. Nearly seven feet of snow had covered the area, making rescue operations extremely difficult. The trapped workers hailed from Uttarakhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Authorities remain hopeful of rescuing the remaining workers soon as operations continue despite the challenging conditions.

Chandigarh: Amidst the absence of BJP’s two legislators in the 117-member house, the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday unanimously passed a resolution against the Centre’s draft National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing, terming it an “attempt to bring back the three farm laws repealed by the Centre in 2021 following widespread farmer protests”.

The resolution, moved by Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian and supported by the main Opposition Congress, said: “This House rejects the draft National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing. The House feels that this draft policy is an attempt to bring back the contentious provisions of the three farm laws repealed in 2021 by the government of India after a long protest by farmers.”

“The house feels since this issue is a state subject, according to the Constitution, the Centre should not come up with any such policy and should leave it to the wisdom of the states to frame suitable policies on the subject according to its concerns and requirements.”

In his remarks on the resolution, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said that “by implementing the policy, the Centre wants to replicate the three controversial farm laws through other means”.

“Be it the issue of Rural Development Fund (RDF) or any other issue concerning the state, the Centre doesn’t leave any issue to target Punjab. The most recent example is the issue of Indians being deported from the US. Even though few Punjabis were among the deportees, the US military planes were made to land at Amritsar so that only Punjab’s name gets tarnished,” said Mann, who was donning sunglasses in the Assembly owing to an “eye infection”.

Supporting the cause of the protesting farmers and favouring the motion, Renewal Energy Minister Aman Arora urged farmer unions agitating at Shambhu and Khanauri borders to open the inter-state highways “as their closure, the lifelines of Punjab, has resulted in adverse impact on the industry and trade”.

“While the entire House supports the farmer agitation going on at Shambhu and Khanauri borders, it is a matter of grave concern that because of the closure of these roads, industrial orders worth crores are being cancelled. If the blockades continue, our industry and trade will be affected and ultimately, it will impact the state’s economy,” he said.

Terming the BJP an “anti-Punjab party”, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa said the “BJP is hell-bent on weakening Punjab both economically and politically. The BJP only serves the interests of multinational companies and big corporations and is least bothered about working for the interests of farmers and other unprivileged sections”.

“The BJP has been conspiring to undermine the farming sector for a long time. During the Atal Bihari Vajpai-led BJP government, the Shanta Kumar Commission on Agriculture recommended dismantling the Food Corporation of India (FCI). The BJP government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi still pursuing the same,” the Congress leader said.

He also slammed the AAP government for its failure to defend the case against the Union government in the Supreme Court to get the RDF of Rs 8,000 crore.

“If Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann takes the lead to safeguard the interests of Punjab, we can even join them in protests at the residence of PM Modi to get the pending RDF,” Bajwa added.

Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday transferred the 19th tranche of PM Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) into accounts of crores of farmers, from Bihar’s Bhagalpur district. An amount of Rs 22,000 crore was transferred into the accounts of over 9.8 crore farmers including 2.41 crore female farmers through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

The fresh instalment of PM-KISAN to farmers reinforces the Centre’s commitment to rural development and agricultural prosperity.

The previous 18th instalment of PM-KISAN was disbursed by the Prime Minister from Maharashtra’s Washim in October 2024. This event was also intended to benefit over 9.4 crore farmers across the country receiving direct financial benefits, amounting to more than Rs 20,000 crore.

Since the inception of the flagship program in February 2025, the Modi government has disbursed over Rs 3.46 lakh crore in 18 instalments.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi also took to social media on X and reiterated the government’s commitment towards their welfare.

PM Modi said that the government was proud of its Annadatas.

“We are proud of our Annadatas and our commitment to improve their lives is reflected in the efforts highlighted in the thread below, ” he wrote in a post on X.

He also expressed happiness over the nation observing the 6th anniversary of the PM-KISAN scheme and its success in catering to the needs of crores of people with continued support.

He expressed satisfaction that so far about Rs 3.5 lakh crore has reached their accounts.

“Congratulations to our farmer brothers and sisters across the country on completing 6 years of PM-Kisan. It is a matter of great satisfaction and pride for me that nearly three lakh crore rupees have reached their accounts so far. Our effort is giving respect, prosperity, and new strength to our food providers,” the Prime Minister said in an earlier post.

New Delhi: Tokyo Olympic silver medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has said that she is feeling honoured to join the ‘fight against obesity’ campaign launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Monday, PM Modi, highlighting the urgent need to combat rising obesity rates, nominated ten prominent individuals to champion the cause of reducing edible oil consumption. He also urged them to nominate 10 more people to further expand the movement.

“As mentioned in yesterday’s #MannKiBaat, I would like to nominate the following people to help strengthen the fight against obesity and spread awareness on reducing edible oil consumption in food,” PM Modi wrote on X while tagging Anand Mahindra, Dinesh Lal Yadav ‘Nirahua’, Manu Bhaker, Mirabai Chanu, Mohanlal, Nandan Nilekani, Omar Abdullah, Madhavan, Shreya Ghoshal and Sudha Murty.

“I also request them to nominate 10 people each so that our movement gets bigger! Collectively, let us make India fitter and healthier. #FightObesity,” the post further read.

“I am extremely honoured to be nominated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to spread awareness in the fight against obesity. This is a major health concern that can be eliminated by making the right lifestyle choices and choosing to be active, healthy and fit. We need India to move in this direction to support and enhance our growth journey,” Mirabai said.

“Making small changes to our daily lives can result in a huge transformation for the country and help us move towards achieving our dream of making a Fit India,” she added.

As a part of the initiative, the star weightlifter further nominated world chess champion Gukesh Dommaraju, London Olympic bronze medallist shuttler Saina Nehwal, London 2012 bronze medal-winning shooter Gagan Narang, former hockey captains Rani Rampal & Manpreet Singh, tennis great Leander Paes, two-time Olympic medallist shuttler PV Sindhu, paddler Manika Batra, Paris 2024 bronze medallist Sarabjot Singh and two-time Paralympic champion shooter Avani Lekhara.

During an address in the 119th Episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi discussed rising cases of obesity and said, “To become a fit and healthy nation, we will certainly have to deal with the problem of obesity. According to a study, one in every eight people today is troubled by the problem of obesity. Cases of obesity have doubled in the past years, but, what is even more worrying is that the problem of obesity has increased fourfold even among children. WHO data shows that in 2022, about 250 crore people around the world were overweight; that is, they had more weight than required.”

“We can together deal with this challenge with minor efforts. For example, one method I suggested was ‘reducing the consumption of edible oil by ten per cent’. Decide that you will use 10 per cent less oil every month. You can decide that while buying oil for cooking, you will buy 10 per cent less oil. This will be an important step towards reducing obesity,” he added.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday said that as a special initiative dedicated to women’s empowerment, he will hand over his social media accounts to a few inspiring women, ‘Naari Shakti’, from across the country on International Women’s Day.

He said that this would provide the women with a platform to share their stories and achievements. He also urged the women to participate in this initiative.

PM Modi also said that International Women’s Day is a special occasion to honour India’s Naari Shakti (women power), highlighting their contributions to shaping the nation’s past, present, and future.

Quoting a shloka from Devi Mahatmya, a Hindu philosophical text, PM Modi explained that it signifies how “all forms of knowledge are manifestations of the Goddess and that she is reflected in all women’s power in the world.”

“Respect for daughters has been given top priority in our culture. Women’s power has also played an important role in the Independence movement and the making of our Constitution,” he said.

The Prime Minister shared an audio clip of Hansa Mehta, a key figure in India’s freedom struggle and constitutional drafting, presenting the national flag in the Constituent Assembly.

In the clip, Mehta is heard saying: “It is in the fitness of things that this first flag, that is flying over this August House, should be a gift from the women of India. We have donned the saffron colour, we have fought, suffered, and sacrificed for the cause of our country’s freedom. We have today attained our goal.”

Reflecting on this, PM Modi emphasised that Hansa Mehta’s words underscored the deep sacrifices made by Indian women for the nation’s independence and symbolised their unwavering spirit.

“She believed that the saffron colour in the tricolour also reflects this sentiment. She expressed confidence that our women’s power will make India strong and prosperous. Today, her words are proving true. In every field, women’s contributions are immense and inspiring,” he added.

New Delhi: Actor Vicky Kaushal says he feels honoured by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s praise for his historical action drama film Chhaava.

At the inaugural function of the 98th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan (ABMSS) Friday, Modi said Maharashtra and Mumbai have taken Marathi films and Hindi cinema to greater heights.

“Aur in dino toh, Chhaava ki dhoom machi hui hai. (Chhaava is making headlines everywhere right now),” Modi said about the movie, which has earned over Rs 300 crore globally since its release in theatres last week.

Chhaava stars Kaushal in the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was the son of Maratha empire founder Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

“Honoured beyond words! Grateful to Hon. PM Narendra Modi ji. #Chhaava,” the actor wrote on Instagram alongside a video of Modi from the event.

Rashmika Mandanna, who stars as Yesubai in the movie, posted on her Instagram Stories, “Thank you so much @narendramodi sir, it’s truly an honour.”

Chhaava is produced by producer Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock films and the banner also shared a clip of Modi on its official Instagram handle.

“A historic honour! It is a great moment of pride as Honorable Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji applauds ‘Chhaava’ and honours Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s sacrifice and legacy.

“This moment fills us with immense gratitude.@maddockfilms, #DineshVijan, @laxman.utekar, @vickykaushal09, and the entire team of the film are humbled by this special mention,” the studio said.

Chhaava has been declared tax-free in Goa and Madhya Pradesh. It also stars Akshaye Khanna, Diana Penty, Vineet Kumar Singh and Ashutosh Rana.

New Delhi: A three-member selection committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met  Monday to pick the successor of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar who is set to retire  February 18 (Tuesday).

The meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s Office in South Block.

PM Modi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, nominated by the Prime Minister, attended the selection committee meeting.

This will be the first appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner under the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioner Act, 2023 which came into force in December 2023. S.S. Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar were appointed as Election Commissioners under this provision in March 2024.

The two Commissioners were appointed to fill vacancies created following the resignation of Arun Goel and the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey.

Before the introduction of the new statutory provisions for the appointment of the CEC and Election Commissioners, the senior most among the two remaining Election Commissioners was typically elevated to the top post, following consultations with the outgoing CEC. However, under the revised selection process, appointments are now made based on a majority or consensus decision within the selection panel.

Several PILs concerning the appointment process, especially, for not including the Chief Justice of India in the panel as was the norm earlier, are pending before the Supreme Court.

The apex court has scheduled a hearing for these petitions February 19.

It would be interesting to see if the three-member selection panel picks up a new CEC or decides to elevate one of the incumbent Election Commissioners to the post.

If they go for the first option, the new CEC will conduct the 2029 Lok Sabha elections since the tenure is six years. The new CEC will conduct the Bihar Assembly elections due this year; Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Puducherry polls in 2026; and Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh in 2027.

Meanwhile, Congress suggested that the Central Government adjourn the meeting to select the new CEC until the Supreme Court hears the matter slated February 19.

Congress leader Ajay Maken said, “Today, a meeting related to the election of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) was held. The Congress party believes that since the Supreme Court had said that the matter would be heard February 19 and a decision would be given on what the constitution of the committee should be like. In such a situation, today’s meeting should have been postponed…”

The party also alleged that by removing the Chief Justice of India (CJI) from the panel to select CEC, the central government made it clear that it wants control not credibility of the poll body.

Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared with US President Donald Trump his concerns over the recent developments in Bangladesh and how India sees the situation in that country, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has said.

Trump hosted Modi for talks at the White House Thursday (Friday India time) during which they discussed bilateral, regional and global issues.

At a media briefing, Misri said the situation in Bangladesh was a subject of discussion between the two leaders.

“And the Prime Minister shared his views and, indeed, his concerns about recent developments in Bangladesh and how India sees the situation,” he said.

“I think we hope that the situation in Bangladesh will also move forward in a direction where we can pursue relations constructively and stably with them,” the foreign secretary said.

“But there are concerns about that situation. And the Prime Minister shared those views with President Trump,” he said.

There has been a sharp downturn in India-Bangladesh relations after deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka in August in the face of a massive anti-government protest.

The relations nosedived dramatically after the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus failed to contain attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in that country.

Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emplaned for New Delhi after concluding a highly productive visit to the US, marked by key diplomatic engagements and strategic agreements.

His trip, highlighted by a warm reunion with US President Donald Trump, reaffirmed the strong and evolving India-US partnership.

As PM Modi arrived at the White House Thursday, President Trump welcomed him with a hug and said, “We missed you, we missed you a lot.” The meeting marked their first in five years, and both leaders quickly rekindled their friendship. “It’s great to see you again,” PM Modi responded, setting the tone for a cordial and constructive engagement.

During a joint press conference, President Trump praised PM Modi’s leadership, calling him “a special man” and “a great leader”. He also acknowledged PM Modi’s significant contributions to India’s progress, stating, “He is a great leader and doing really a great job in India. Everybody talks about him. He’s doing really a fantastic job.”

Reflecting on their previous interactions, Trump recalled his visit to India in 2020 and the grand “Namaste Trump” event in Ahmedabad, which he described as “tremendous”.

A major highlight of the visit was the launch of a new initiative, the “US-India COMPACT (Catalysing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century.”

The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration across key sectors, including defence, trade, and technology.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), “As the leaders of sovereign and vibrant democracies that value freedom, the rule of law, human rights, and pluralism, President Trump and Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed the strength of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, anchored in mutual trust, shared interests, goodwill, and robust engagement of their citizens.”

The leaders also set a new economic target under the “Mission 500” framework, aiming to double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030. Additionally, they announced plans to sign a new ten-year Framework for the US-India Major Defence Partnership, underscoring their commitment to deepening defence ties.

Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met SpaceX CEO Elon Musk in Washington Thursday.

US President Donald Trump chose Musk to head a new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last month.

Musk arrived at Blair House with his three young children, who were sitting with Musk when he met Modi.

Earlier, Modi met US National Security Advisor Michael Waltz.

The meeting with Waltz was the first engagement of the day. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval were also present at the meeting.

Modi arrived in the US capital Wednesday evening for a bilateral meeting with President Trump.

After arriving at Blair House, the President’s Guest House, Modi met the US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Just hours before her meeting with Modi, Gabbard took the oath of office as the 8th Director of National Intelligence in the presence of Trump.

Washington: In what was his first formal official meeting after arriving here, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Tulsi Gabbard fresh off from her Senate victory confirming her as the Director of National Intelligence.

Following the meeting Wednesday night, PM Modi posted X: “Congratulated her on her confirmation. Discussed various aspects of the India-USA friendship, of which she’s always been a strong votary.”

Gabbard overcame strong opposition and scepticism to win the Senate vote Wednesday for her confirmation for the nation’s top intelligence job and was sworn in just hours before meeting PM Modi.

She received 52 votes to 48, with only one Republican, Senator Mitch McConnell, joining the Democrats to vote against her.

She is an American Hindu with parents who have embraced the faith.

Some of those opposed to her used her religion in their campaign against her.

During her 11 years in the House of Representatives, she was a strong supporter of India.

She was the co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans.

She also served on the House Intelligence Subcommittee and the Armed Forces Committee.

A former Vice President of the Democratic Party, she left the party and joined the Republican Party and campaigned for Trump last year.

Attorney General Pam Bondi administered the oath of office to Gabbard, who Trump called “an American of extraordinary courage and patriotism”.

He noted that she was deployed three times in the Army National Guard and that she is a former Democratic Congresswoman, riffing, “Can you believe that?”

Gabbard, 43, a former Democratic Congresswoman from Hawaii, had faced bipartisan scepticism about her suitability for overseeing the spy agencies.

Gabbard thanked the President for his trust in her and vowed to “refocus our intelligence community” after she was sworn in.

“Unfortunately, the American people have very little trust in the intelligence community, largely because they’ve seen the weaponisation and politicisation of an entity that is supposed to be purely focused on ensuring our national security,” the new Intelligence Chief said.

She has met PM Modi several times in the past, and after a meeting in 2019, she said, “India is the world’s largest democracy and one of the United States most important partners in the Asia-Pacific region.”

“It is important that we continue to strengthen this partnership between our two nations that has long had support from both Democrat and Republican leaders,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated in a post on X that discussions during Wednesday’s meeting also focused on enhancing intelligence cooperation in counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, and emerging threats.

“PM Narendra Modi held a productive meeting with US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard in Washington DC today. Discussions focused on enhancing intelligence cooperation in counter-terrorism, cybersecurity and emerging threats,” the post said.

PM Modi arrived in the US capital Wednesday around 5.30 p.m. (Thursday, 4 a.m. IST) after a visit to France, where he had co-chaired the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit with French President Emmanuel Macron.

PM Modi and Trump will hold bilateral discussions in the White House Thursday.

“Our nations will keep working closely for the benefit of our people and for a better future for our planet,” PM Modi said on X.

Washington: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on a two-day visit to hold high-stakes talks with President Donald Trump in the face of concerns in New Delhi over Washington’s new “America First” trade agenda as well as its policy on immigration.

The prime minister will be hosted by the US President on Thursday in what would be the first bilateral talks between the two leaders after Trump assumed the presidency for a second term last month.

“Landed in Washington DC a short while ago. Looking forward to meeting @POTUS Donald Trump and building upon the India-USA Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. Our nations will keep working closely for the benefit of our people and for a better future for our planet. @realDonaldTrump,” Modi posted on X along with pictures.

Modi is staying at the Blair House, the US presidential guest house at the heart of the American capital city.

As Prime Minister Modi reached Blair House, the President’s Guest House, he was accorded a rousing welcome by members of the Indian-American diaspora.

Braving freezing temperatures and rain, the community members gathered at Blair House and welcomed him with slogans of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’, ‘Vande Mataram’ and ‘Modi Modi’ as they waved the Indian and American flags.

“A warm reception in the winter chill! Despite the cold weather, the Indian diaspora in Washington DC has welcomed me with a very special welcome. My gratitude to them,” Modi said on X.

Prime Minister’s office posted on X, “Upon his arrival in Washington DC, PM @narendramodi received an enthusiastic welcome from the Indian community.”

He also shared few pictures.

Prime Minister Modi also met newly appointed Director of National Intelligence in the Donald Trump administration Tulsi Gabbard, and discussed India-USA friendship, of which he said, she has been a “strong votary”.

He also congratulated 43-year-old Gabbard on her confirmation as the nation’s top intelligence official.

This was Modi’s second interaction with the top leadership of the Trump administration. In France, at the dinner, he met US Vice President JD Vance, who was there to attend the AI Summit.

With Trump’s tariff policy sending shockwave across the world, Modi’s key priority is likely to be to pre-empt any punitive trade action by Washington against India.

People closely tracking India-US ties said there is a possibility of both sides exploring the option of looking at a trade pact to avoid high tariffs and expand the overall trade basket.

In their meeting, the two leaders are likely to broadly focus on ramping up India-US cooperation in sectors like trade, investment, energy, defence, technology and immigration.

Apart from some possible sector-specific outcomes, it will be interesting to see the optics and what kind of broader signal the meeting between Modi and Trump, known for their personal bonhomie, produces with sensitive issues like immigration and tariff expected to be focus of the talks.

The prime minister’s visit to the American capital comes days after the Trump administration deported 104 Indians in handcuffs and shackles on a military aircraft that sparked outrage in India.

Last week, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in Parliament that New Delhi is in touch with the US to ensure that returning Indian deportees are not mistreated in any manner.

Another major issue on the table is set to be trade as Trump’s policy on tariffs on rivals and allies alike.

Modi’s visit to the US comes shortly after Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on global steel and aluminium imports into the US. The move is expected to hit the Indian firms exporting steel and aluminium to the US.

India has already indicated its readiness to adopt a more conciliatory approach on the sensitive issue unlike its hardline approach during Trump’s first term.

It is learnt that New Delhi may consider slashing tariffs in at least a dozen sector provided some reciprocity by the White House. Modi and Trump are unlikely to discuss specifics on tariff but the two leaders may deliberate on a broader picture.

The bilateral trade between India and the US was around USD 130 billion last year.

The two leaders are also likely to touch upon overall situation in the Indo-Pacific, Ukraine and developments in West Asia.

Modi and Trump, during a phone conversation on January 27, vowed to work towards a “trusted” partnership with a focus on boosting India-US cooperation in areas of trade, energy and defence.

Following the phone talks, the White House said Trump emphasised the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made security equipment and moving toward a fair bilateral trade relationship.

Modi and Trump are likely to focus on boosting the energy ties.

On February 1, New Delhi announced plans to amend its nuclear liability law and set up a nuclear energy mission.

Certain clauses in India’s Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010 have emerged as hurdles in moving forward in implementation of the historic civil nuclear deal that was firmed up between the two strategic partners around 16 years back.

It is learnt that India is looking at the possibility of civil nuclear cooperation with the US in the small modular reactors (SMRs).

Modi arrived right after his visit to France where he had co-chaired the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit with French President Emmanuel Macron.

He is the fourth foreign leader hosted by Trump over the weeks since his inauguration.

Within less than a month of the start of his second term in the White House, Trump has hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
